Three short design projects will be assigned during the term. They will be Matlab-based and are meant to provide students with a deeper understanding of the design trade-offs in communications systems. The assignments and solutions will be provided on this page. The Matlab code will be available from the Matlab page.
Your grade will be based on your written report. Please note that writing abilities (and communication skills in general) are an important skill that an engineer must learn to master. I strongly encourage you to hone your technical writing skill in this report. A sample report format is provided for your use.
NOTE: The project descriptions listed below will not be available until the project assignment date (two weeks prior to the due date).
Project #1 concerns sampling and quantization. You will need to download several Matlab files from the Matlab page and read the project description. Note that the project is due in class on September 28, 2007.
Project #2 concerns modulation. You will again need to download several Matlab files from the Matlab page and read the project description. Note that this project is due in class on October 26, 2007. Here is some help on the theoretical BER values, in case we don't get to it in class before you are ready to use it.
Project #3 concerns pulse shaping, matched filtering, and fading. You will again need to download several Matlab files from the Matlab page and read the project description. Note that this project is due in class on November 30, 2007.
