R. Michael Buehrer, Biography

Mike Buehrer comes to Virginia Tech from his position as a Distinguished Member Technical Staff in the Digital Signal Processing Group of Bell Laboratories' Wireless Technology Laboratory. His focus was on conducting research into advanced technologies for cellular communications to support product development, systems engineering, customer relations, standardization groups, and generating intellectual property. Prior to joining Bell Labs, Dr. Buehrer earned his doctorate from Virginia Tech's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1996. While working on his Ph.D., he was a graduate research assistant with the Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group (MPRG) and a Bradley Fellow. At that time his main responsibilities included the research of multi-user receiver structures and hardware implementation issues for base station interference cancellation for the ARPA/WAMIS project. Dr. Buehrer also worked as a senior engineer for the Advanced programs Division of Stanford Communications of Reston, Va. After a short stint with the company in 1994, he continued to serve as an off site consultant, providing technical and software support for the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) propagation project until 1996. Buehrer's teaching experience includes the position of adjunct professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology since January of 2001. He taught a graduate level communications course and he provided lectures on multi-user detection in another course. Among his professional activities, Buehrer served as an associate editor for Wireless Communications for the IEEE Journal on Education from 1997 until 1999. He is also a reviewer for four other IEEE publications and for one ETRI journal. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in EE from the University of Toledo in 1991 and in 1993, respectively.
