The demand for high data rate
wireless communications is rapidly growing with the integration of internet and
multi-media services in wireless systems. The design of high data rate services
that also guarantee good Quality-of -Service (QOS) is one of the key research
challenges facing system designers today. A promising technology is Multiple
Input Multiple Output (MIMO) wireless, which uses multiple antennas at the
transmitter and the receiver. Theoretically, the technology has the potential to
provide many orders of magnitude increase in capacity at no cost of increased
system bandwidth. This increased capacity can be exploited to provide either
increased data rates or increased reliability of the transmitted data.
Understandably, MIMO is the subject of considerable interest and research. These
techniques are making their presence felt in commercial standards such as 3G and
WLAN.
Here, at MPRG, we have undertaken several
research initiatives in the broad area of MIMO systems. This website outlines the research in MIMO at
MPRG and provides an overview of the technology for the uninitiated along with
key references.
