SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS
On June 7-9, 2006, MPRG will host its 16th Annual Symposium on Wireless Personal Communications and the 2 nd Wireless Summer School. Oral presentations and tutorials will be given by leading researchers from both university and industry partners.
The fast pace of technological advancement in the wireless area makes concise, well done tutorials extremely valuable to wireless professionals. Highlights from this year's offerings include tutorials in the growing fields of software radio and cognitive radios. Specifically, Virginia Tech's own Charles Bostian, a leading researcher in the area, will deliver a short course on cognitive radio, a key emerging technology in both the military and commercial wireless sectors. A second tutorial given by researcher Max Robert will cover the important Software Communications Architecture. This tutorial will be complimented by a third related tutorial given by Mark Hermeling of Zeligsoft, Inc. on software design for software radios. Finally, a fourth course which specifically covers networking issues for software radios will be delivered by Dr. Tom Hou.
Other emerging technologies that will be covered in the series of short courses include ultra wideband, wearable computing, game theory, antenna design, RFID, turbo codes, and MEMS. These tutorials provide an excellent opportunity for wireless professionals to learn about both the basics of each technology, as well as recent breakthroughs in each area.
Starting Wednesday morning, June 7, the symposium program opens with oral presentations. Technical papers in the areas of ultra wideband, cognitive radio, interference management, and MIMO systems will be presented. An expanded poster session including academic and industrial presentations will allow one-on-one technical discussions of recent advances in the field of wireless. Poster sessions will be held during all daily refreshment breaks. The Wednesday afternoon schedule will feature three concurrent half-day tutorials covering software design for software radios, advanced coding techniques, and the software communications architecture. Wednesday evening will be a time of relaxing and socializing with colleagues and friends during a reception from 6:30-9:00 PM at the conference center.
Thursday's schedule will continue with concurrent half-day short courses on cognitive radio, RFID, UWB-based position location, implementation aspects of UWB transceivers, networking for software radios, and wearable computing. Friday's program will conclude with short courses covering game theory, antennas, and MEMS. As always, we look forward to the symposium party on Thursday evening.
We are confident that our discussions of cutting-edge topics will appeal to academic, as well as industry, professionals. Don't miss out – register today!

Annual Wireless Symposium
The annual MPRG/Virginia Tech Symposium on Wireless Personal Communications, held in Blacksburg each June, provides an opportunity for top wireless researchers from industry and academia worldwide to present research findings, discuss emerging technologies, and debate crucial issues to the wireless industry. Sponsored by the MPRG Industrial Affiliate program, the symposium is highly technical and draws researchers from around the world to Virginia Tech each summer. Paper sessions comprise the heart of the symposium, while short courses provide an opportunity for learning both the basics and recent breakthroughs in each area. Poster sessions provide an additional opportunity to display research in an informal environment conducive to individual interaction. The symposium provides a technical setting that fosters the exchange of information between academia and industry.
